The foreskin is the thin tissue that covers the head of the reproductive organ, and its removal is often normalized in religious traditions.

To this day, many parents ensure that their sons are circumcised within the first or second day after birth, as the procedure becomes more complex the older the male is.

Circumcision for newborns takes less than ten minutes, while the same process for adults extends up to an hour.

Making the Decision

For a child, the decision to be circumcised is always taken up by the parents of the child. From religious preferences, family tradition to personal hygiene, there are many reasons why parents would agree to circumcision.

In other contexts, such as men certain parts of Africa prefer to be circumcised in order to reduce risk of sexually transmitted diseases or infections.

In addition to this, there are many more health benefits to being circumcised. The American Academy of Pediatrics had also confirmed that the benefits of circumcision far outweigh the risks.

Why Circumcise?

  • Easier to Maintain Hygiene: A circumcised penis is much easier to wash as compared to an uncircumcised penis, and lowers risk of the collection of dead skin cells. However, males with uncircumcised penises can be guided on the right way to wash beneath their foreskin.
  • Decreased Risk of Urinary Infections: While the risk of urinary tract infections are generally low in males, there have been findings that proved these infections are found to be more common in uncircumcised males. A severe infection of the urinary tract can result in bladder and/or kidney problems as the individual grows older.
  • Easy Prevention of Penile Problems: There have been cases where the foreskin of the uncircumsized penis is unable to retract, and attempting to do so is either painful or uncomfortable for the male. This tends to result in an inflammation of the foreskin on the head of the penis.
  • Decreased risk of sexual transmitted diseases and infections: Clinical studies have revealed that circumcised males have a lower risk of being prone to sexually transmitted infections like HIV. It has been indicated that the foreskin contains a specific set of cells that attract the HIV virus cells, thereby making the male more prone to being infected.
  • Decreased risk of penile cancer: The general percentage of being diagnosed with penile cancer is rare, however, the possibility is even less in circumcised men. In addition to this, it’s found that cancer of the cervix is less likely in female sexual partners of circumcised men.

Post the circumcision surgery, it takes around ten days for the foreskin to heal in babies.

However, in older boys and adult men, the healing process often takes upto three weeks or more.
